Grow Up!

GROW UP!

I believe the overwhelming majority of us have been told to “grow up” when we

were kids, teens, young adults and even as adults. That being said, we all did and

said things in the past that I’m sure if were brought up today, we would be

ashamed or embarrassed about those things. What should matter is our words and

actions today as well as in the recent past, not something we said twenty or thirty

years ago. You can say whatever you want, but times were indeed different and

times change. Some music back then would be threatening now, such as dating 16

year olds or songs such as “Baby It’s Cold Outside” which today would basically

be considered kidnapping.

Again, what should matter is our behavior and words now. Did we as an individual

learn anything as we grew up or are we still bigoted and insensitive?

We have, as a society, decided to drudge up old photos and videos from decades

ago to ruin the reputations of people who publicly appear to lead good and

productive lives. Why? Don’t their actions and deeds in the most recent decades

reflect that they have “grown up”?

I’m not referring to people who have an ongoing history of molesting children,

women or criminal activity. That’s another story all together.

If you don’t think all this “politically correctness” has gotten out of hand, what

chance does the current generation of children and teens and young adults have.

They are our future and many may have already compromised their reputations with

what they post on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, sexting, and all the other social

media. Remember, they are our future. Will they pass the scrutiny that we apply to

politicians, actors, comedians and business leaders or will they “grow up”? Even if

they do change their thinking and behavior, will we as a society accept them 20

years from now or demonize them for what they are doing and saying today?

I suggest we gather out collective thoughts and reset our boundaries. Let’s take a

look at the people we have judged to be racists or misogynists and look at their

deeds, actions and words as adults and reevaluate them. Just possibly we are

wrong in applying today’s standards to the last century’s behavior and they should

be given another chance.

Consider this verse from the Bible: “When I was a child, I spake as a child, I felt as

a child, I thought as a child: now that I am become a man, I have put away childish

things.”

Do Your Homework When Hiring a Contractor

In Uncategorized on January 7, 2019 at 10:45 am

Hiring a contractor? Do your homework, before he does your home-work!

Bids:

You should be prepared. Make a list of what you want done. Each contractor should be bidding on the same list. Always get three bids. All bids should be free. All bids should be in writing.

References:

Check out references. I had some driveway work done on my house. The contractor never followed through with my complaint six months later. He has my name on his list of references. When someone calls, I tell them “No, I’m not satisfied and do not recommend him”.

How was the workmanship? Cleanliness? Were they satisfied? If possible, see the jobs.

Contract:

As for the contract itself, the contract should include job specifications i.e.:

  • Detailed description of work to be done.
  • Materials to be used.
  • Cost of the job upon completion.
  • Payment schedule.
  • Permits needed and who is responsible for them.
  • Change order clause (any changes must be in writing).
  • Statement of insurance.
  • License number of the contractor.
  • Guaranty or warranty.
  • Method of debris removal and who will be responsible.
  • Start and completion dates.

Any contract signed at your house can be canceled within three days. Also get a release of liens at the time of paying the final payment. If you pay your contractor and he fails to pay any of or all of his “subs”, they in turn can sue you, put a lien on your house forcing you to pay twice. Get the release of liens.
